“With my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma,” she told People. “I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors, and because I got a second opinion.”
Later, Rita told The New York Times about her husband’s support and care during her cancer treatment: “You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this,” she said. “I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me … who knew it would make you even closer?”
Today: They Are Still Each Other’s Biggest Fans
Since Rita was given the all-clear in May 2015, she’s released three albums and produced several films (including Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), and Tom has starred in several films of his own, including Sully, The Post, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Greyhound.
And, of course, the couple has remained supportive of one another throughout, including when Rita received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “She has a highlight reel that any of us would envy,” Tom said of his wife’s career at the event.
