Andre Smith, a former star of the Husker men’s basketball team, passed away over the weekend at the age of 64. The specifics of the arrangements will be revealed over the next few days.
The product of Chicago, Illinois, started for Joe Cipriano and Moe Iba for three seasons and helped the Huskers finish as runners-up in the Big Eight Conference three times during his playing career.
Smith’s senior year was one of the best in school history and he was twice named to the first team All-Big Eight. The 6-foot-7 forward, who averaged 18.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, was awarded the 1981 Big Eight Player of the Year.
He averaged 19.5 points per game during conference play to lead the conference, and his.589 field goal percentage was the highest in the Big Eight.
Smith received AP Honorable-Mention All-America recognition in 1981 and is one of just two conference players of the year in program history (the other being Venson Hamilton in 1998).
Smith led the Huskers to an 18-13 record and an appearance in the NIT as a junior, earning first-team All-Big Eight recognition and AP Honorable-Mention All-American honors. He also averaged 19.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Smith is fourth on NU’s all-time scoring list with 1,717 points and ranks in the top 10 of school charts for career rebounds (753, sixth), field goal percentage (.586, fourth), field goals made (673, fourth), and attempted (673, fourth). His name is also all over the Husker record books more than four decades after his collegiate career (1,148, 10th).
Smith was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the seventh round of the 1981 NBA Draft. In 1994, he was inducted into the Nebraska basketball Hall of Fame.
