In response to Michael Fanone’s criticism of Tucker Carlson’s revised account of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Anderson Cooper speculated on what would have transpired if Carlson had been present at the uprising.
The CNN host claimed on Tuesday night that it was difficult to envision Tucker Carlson being in that mob that day without peeing his pants. “I have a hard time understanding someone who has the guts to try to rewrite history despite never putting himself in danger for anyone else or while covering a subject. That’s what this is, after all.”
Cooper blasted Carlson and Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), for inventing a conspiracy theory that presented the fatal uprising as a largely peaceful demonstration with minimal violence. Last week, after receiving exclusive access to 41,000 hours of footage from Capitol Police security cameras on Jan. 6, 2021, from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Carlson broadcast snippets of the largest previously unseen tape on his Fox News program.

Stephen Colbert was one of those critics, accusing Carlson of selecting only the best images to portray the protesters as tourists and “sightseers.”
“Sightseers? tourists, really?” Colbert remarked. The CBS late-night presenter then imagined a rioter’s dialogue: “We’re heading to the Louvre, honey, so grab a rock. I want to spread my shit on the Mona Lisa in peace. Check to see whether she smiles after that.”

In response to a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News, a number of internal communications were made public on Tuesday. This coincides with criticism of Carlson’s inaccurate account of the Capitol riot. The election-technology firm claims that Fox News seriously harmed its business prospects by encouraging Donald Trump allies to falsely assert on Fox programs that the election was rigged in favor of Joe Biden.
Text messages from Carlson, who defended Trump on-air but had told colleagues that he “really can’t wait” to basically ignore Trump, were among the numerous exhibits that were made public on Tuesday.
“I loathe him strongly,” Carlson texted a colleague, according to the evidence. “He excels in destructing things. He is without a doubt the world’s best at that. If we play it badly, he may easily destroy us.”
Some Senate Republicans have slammed Carlson for portraying the Capitol brawl on his show this week, breaking with their House GOP colleagues and criticizing the Fox News anchor.
McConnell told reporters, “I think it was a mistake for Fox News to portray this in a way that’s absolutely at odds with what our chief law enforcement official here in the Capitol thinks. “To somehow put [Jan. 6] in the same category as an allowed peaceful protest is just a falsehood, added Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.).

Sen. Josh Hawley defended Carlson after he said the footage of the Missouri senator leaving the Capitol was a “fake” on Tuesday night when Carlson blasted McConnell and other Republicans.
Reporters were informed by Hawley, “I think it’s terrific. “I’m happy he’s acting the way he is.”
Yet late-night hosts and cable news hosts did not think Carlson was doing well.
In his interview with Fanone, CNN’s Cooper said, “It is an attempt to rewrite history on what is one of the most significant, if not the biggest events in American democracy, biggest threats to American democracy.
McCarthy was blasted by Colbert on CBS for promising to become speaker in exchange for their support, including granting Carlson exclusive access to the Capitol Police video.
They “desperately wanted someone, anyone, to produce propaganda to make it appear like [Jan. 6, 2021] was no big thing so they can remain in office and perhaps pull off a better coup next time,” Colbert claimed on CBS. McCarthy fulfilled his promise, too.
Hawley told the reporters, “I think it’s excellent. I appreciate how he is acting right now.”
On the other hand, cable news hosts and late-night hosts did not believe Carlson was performing well.
CNN’s Cooper spoke with Fanone and stated, “It represents an effort to rewrite history regarding one of the most important, if not the most important, challenges to American democracy.”
During Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” comedian Marlon Wayans made fun of Carlson’s new story, stating, “According to Fox News, we just got the footage incorrect.” Wayans, who was emceeing Tuesday’s show, disagreed with Colbert with Carlson’s characterization of the rioters as “sightseers.”
Wayans remarked that if a police officer must be punched as you enter a building, you are not sightseeing but fighting.

Seth Meyers’ NBC program adopted a different strategy. The host explained the entire incident with McCarthy providing Carlson the video in ways that “The Simpsons” fans could easily comprehend.

The panelists concurred that crucial context from the Fox host’s show this week was lacking after Democratic and Republican politicians questioned Carlson and Fox for airing the footage and portraying the event as largely peaceful.
According to Wayans, Tucker Carson only shows that you can improve anything by hiding its flaws.
