It appears that Dave Chappelle is no longer a big fan of the Golden State. The controversial comic revealed his disdain for the city when performing a surprise show on Thursday night at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. He also asked the audience a crucial question.
According to the show’s review on SFGATE, he reportedly remarked during his set, “What the f—k happened to this place?” Chappelle, 49, discussed San Francisco’s homelessness issue during the performance and purportedly related a tale about seeing someone pee in front of the restaurant he was about to eat at.
30 percent of all Americans who experienced homelessness as of 2022 lived in California, according to research released in February 2023 by the Public Policy Institute of California. The Bay Area, according to Chappelle, has transformed into “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” and he joked that they need “a Batman,” according to the site.
His perspective on San Francisco wasn’t all negative, though, as he referred to the city as his second home before going into all the reasons why he didn’t appear to enjoy being there at the start of the event. He said that early on in his comedic career, hundreds of times, he would perform there.
The site added that none of the VIP guests he brought out on stage the previous time he was in San Francisco, including Twitter scion Elon Musk, were present this time. Chappelle will travel to Pennsylvania for two performances in June, but it’s not certain when he’ll arrive in New York City.
The comedian has experienced some controversy over the previous several years, including one that occurred this past November while he served as “Saturday Night Live” host. Before Chappelle ever appeared, some of the late-night show’s staff writers decided to skip the program.

During the performance, the comedian made fun of San Francisco by asking, “What the f-k happened to this place?” He discussed the antisemitism being expressed at the time by Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving and Kanye West in his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live. He also made some questionable “jokes” about it all.
“I’ve been to Hollywood — don’t want you to get mad at me, I’m just telling you I’ve been to Hollywood, this is just what I saw,” he said at one point during the monologue, while also stating that he denounced antisemitism in “all forms.” “It’s a lot of Jews.”
Many others expressed disapproval of the appearance, including Jonathan Greenblatt, the president of the Anti-Defamation League.

Following the release of his Netflix stand-up special titled “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about the transgender population, Chappelle became involved in controversy in 2021 as well. He discussed “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling and identified himself as a “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” in it.
He was performing at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last May when he was attacked by a member of the audience who was carrying a fake gun with a real knife inside. As a part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival, he was giving a performance there.
