According to statements made by Gilbert Gottfried’s longtime friend and publicist Glenn Schwartz, the beloved comedian and voice actor Gilbert Gottfried had been diagnosed with a heart issue prior to his passing.
Schwartz confirmed in a statement that Gottfried passed away as a result of recurrent ventricular tachycardia, which was caused by type 2 myotonic dystrophy. According to the Mayo Clinic, ventricular tachycardia is “a heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia) produced by abnormal electrical signals in the lower chambers of the heart.” This definition was provided by the Mayo Clinic.
Myotonic dystrophy is a type of muscular disease that is defined by an inability to relax muscles after they have contracted. The actor, who was admired for his irreverent and shocking style of comedy, also suffered from myotonic dystrophy. According to an announcement made by Gottfried’s family on social media, Gottfried passed away on Tuesday at the age of 67 “after a protracted illness.”
