Paul Vallas rose to prominence in the Chicago community while serving as the CEO of the Chicago Public Schools under the administration of Mayor Richard M. Daley. Vallas was a former City Hall insider who has campaigned as both an expert administrator and a thinker who thinks outside the box.
Vallas made three unsuccessful bids for statewide office: in 2002, for governor, where he was defeated by Rod Blagojevich in the Democratic primary; in 2016, for lieutenant governor, where he and Pat Quinn were defeated by Bruce Rauner; and in 2019, for mayor.
During this time, Vallas has held positions as a teacher in the school districts of Philadelphia, New Orleans, Haiti, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, in addition to working as a consultant. During this time, he has also served in an unpaid capacity for the city’s controversial Fraternal Order of Police.
Despite the fact that he has previously worked for Democrats, the union has given him their support in the race for mayor, and Lightfoot believes that Vallas will be the most conservative option for voters in February.
