Leonard Gordon Goodman was an English professional ballroom dancer, dance instructor, and competition adjudicator who lived from 25 April 1944 to 22 April 2023. Goodman was dubbed “a great entertainer, a popular face on TV screens up and down the country” by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson.

Goodman, who was born and raised in east London, started dancing at the age of 19 after learning that it would be beneficial for his wounded foot.
After retiring from welding to become a teacher and choreographer, the former welder went on to win the British Championships in his late 20s. He then founded the Goodman Academy, a dance school in Dartford, Kent.
From the show’s inception, he served as the head judge, and he made his final appearance on the 2016 Christmas Day special.
He once told the Guardian, “When I was first invited to do the program, I wasn’t sure, since I thought it may be a bit of a mickey-take. “However, I’m so happy that I did it since it has disproved the myth of what dancing classes or schools are like.
The program has altered dancing schools in a way that is impossible to fathom. There have been prodigious influxes of dancers at everyone’s events. It’s wonderful beyond belief.
For more than 15 years, Goodman also served as the show’s lead judge. He announced his retirement in November of last year, citing a desire to “spend more time with my grandchildren and family” in the UK.
