After 29 states, including California, Minnesota, and Maine, issued winter weather advisories with warnings of severe icing, extremely cold temperatures, and precipitation as part of the three-day storm, the trip was delayed.

A coast-to-coast winter storm that affected the majority of the northern half of the country continued to track east from Washington towards New England on Wednesday (local time), causing more than 4,300 flights to be delayed or canceled at airports across the US, according to a report on cbsnews.com.

According to flight tracking website FlightAware, 1,640 flights into and out of the US had been canceled as of Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST.

SkyWest, a regional airline that collaborates with United, Delta, American, and Alaska Airlines, had to cancel more than 350 flights. More than 250 flights have been canceled by both Delta and Southwest. Almost 5,000 flights experienced delays.

Other U.S.-based airlines including United, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines were registering increasing delays but were reporting fewer cancellations (approximately between 40 and 45 each). FlightAware reported that 288 American Airlines flights and 354 United planes were delayed on Wednesday in the afternoon, according to CBS news.

In the northern United States, the wintry mix closed down businesses like offices and schools as well as the Minnesota Legislature. Travel was challenging. According to the tracking firm FlightAware, the weather was a factor in the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights across the United States.

At the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, more than 400 of those were scheduled to arrive or depart. Almost 5,000 additional planes were delayed across the nation.

The National Weather Service in Minnesota’s Twin Cities has warned that the severe storm “will deliver widespread accumulating snow, with blowing and drifting snow mostly Wednesday through Thursday.” The Minneapolis area of Minnesota is at risk of receiving at least 15 inches of snow.
