Eugene Levy, co-creator and star of Schitt’s Creek, takes a risk with The Reluctant Traveler on Apple TV Plus. The comedian is the first to admit that he isn’t the most adventurous or well-traveled person on the planet.
But now, the Emmy winner feels it’s time to leave the Rosebud Motel from Schitt’s Creek and broaden his horizons, so he’s (nervously) packing his suitcase and heading to some of the world’s most beautiful and intriguing places.
Getting the show off the ground wasn’t the easiest thing in the world, however, as Eugene explains: “So I get a call from my agent, who says, ‘We had a call from Apple and they want you to host a show about exotic hotels around the world,’ which, anybody else would go, “Woo! That’s something!” And I thought that’s kind of appealing because I enjoy staying in nice hotels.

But it’s a travel show, and I’m not the best person to host,” he admits. “I don’t dislike traveling; I just don’t enjoy it. And I’m not a chatty person in real life, which I believe is necessary when doing a show like this. I’m not a curious person, and I don’t have a strong sense of adventure.

The Reluctant Traveller follows Eugene Levy as he travels to Costa Rica, Finland, Italy, Japan, the Maldives, Portugal, South Africa, and the United States. “It’s been a real eye-opener,” Eugene says. “It’s not the best thing to say you’re not interested in traveling. It’s not something that people are impressed by. And now I understand.”
Eugene travels to some of the world’s most beautiful and intriguing locations, sharing thrilling local adventures with new friends, such as immersing in a sound bath in the Maldives, ice floating in Finland, connecting with the Navajo Nation in Utah, captaining a sailboat in Lisbon, tasting Tokyo’s culinary culture, and trekking through the Costa Rican jungle.
Levy stays in remarkable hotels along the way, including the historic Gritti Palace in Venice and a train hotel suspended above the Kruger National Park in South Africa.
