The Whale actor Brendan Fraser won the Best Actor Oscar in 2023 for his performance. The psychological drama, which is based on Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name, Fraser, 54, portrays Charlie, a morbidly obese and reclusive English professor.

The main focus of the movie is Charlie’s attempts to repair his relationship with his teenage daughter, who is portrayed by Sadie Sink of Stranger Things. Also, it won the prize for best hair and makeup.

Fraser’s win, which signaled a victorious comeback to Hollywood after a protracted absence, was followed by an emotional acceptance speech from him. He gave the Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once a nod by saying, So this is what the multiverse looks like.

“I appreciate the Academy for this honor… Darren Aronofsky for rescuing my artistic career and bringing me on board the venerable ship The Whale.”

“I started in this company 30 years ago,” he continued. I didn’t appreciate a particular facility at the time until it stopped.

Why Did Brendan Fraser Leave The Entertainment Industry?

Fraser began his career in the 1990s, and thanks to parts in the George of the Jungle (1997) and The Mummy Trilogy, he gained notoriety as an action hero (1999–2008).

He vanished from Hollywood in 2014 though, and it took him until 2019—a five-year break—for him to make another cinematic appearance. Since 2013’s Pawn Shop Chronicles, Fraser hasn’t played the lead in a Hollywood movie until The Whale.

Fraser claimed in 2018 that Philip Berk, the HFPA’s then-president, had s*xually attacked him at a luncheon in 2003. The HFPA is a nonprofit organization that casts ballots for the Golden Globe Awards. Berk disputes the charge.

He claimed that the alleged assault, his separation from actress Afton Smith, the passing of his mother, as well as his personal health issues, caused him to experience despair and take a vacation from the business.

The accusations Fraser leveled against Berk reportedly resulted in him being blacklisted from Hollywood at the time. The HFPA stated that their collaboration with Fraser had always been fruitful.

In an interview with GQ published in 2018, Fraser made the first known accusation against Berk, stating: “I felt ill. I had a childlike feeling. My throat felt like it had a ball in it. I was prepared to cry… At least in my head, I felt like I had lost something.

Fraser commented on the idea that he was on a blacklist when asked about it: “In your profession, the phone does stop ringing, and you start wondering why. Several factors exist, but was this one of them? I believe it was.

“I bought into the pressure that comes with the goals and aims that come with a professional life that’s being fashioned and shaped and steered and managed,” he continued, speaking of his eventual disappearance.

That calls for having “thick skin,” ignoring it, sticking your head in the sand, gritting your teeth, and putting on a brave face, or maybe not even… requiring the public. Ignoring. Fuck it, I’m staying in. Not because I’m distant or anything, but rather because I felt like I couldn’t participate. I didn’t feel that I belonged.
