According to the New York Post, Belzer passed away early on Sunday morning at his house in the South of France, as confirmed by his friend and fellow writer Bill Scheft.
“He had lots of health issues, and his last words were, ‘F**k you, motherf**ker’,” Scheft said.
The actor was best known for his recurring role as Munch on episodes like Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: SVU, but he also appeared in guest spots on other shows including The X Files.
For 23 years, from 1993 until his retirement in 2016, Belzer portrayed Munch. The Wire and Arrested Development weren’t the only shows where he made an appearance as Munch.
“I never asked anyone to be on their show. So it’s doubly flattering to me to see me depicted in a script and that I’m so recognisable and loveable as the sarcastic detective and smart-ass,” Belzer told The Comic’s Comic in 2008.
“Much to my delight, because he is a great character for me to play, it’s fun for me. So I’m not upset about typecast at all.”
Belzer’s life was filled with tragedy despite his reputation as a jokester; both his father and brother committed suicide.
