Authorities in the United States Virgin Islands have launched a criminal investigation into the unsolved death of a retired American athlete. Jamie Cail, 42, was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel at a hospital in St. John last week, according to a news release from the US Virgin Islands Police Department.
Cail, a former competitive swimmer who competed in several major races and won a few titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, lived and worked at a local coffee shop on St. John, according to her family, who spoke to WMUR. According to the station, she was born in Claremont, New Hampshire.

According to US Virgin Islands police, Cail’s boyfriend, whose name has not been released publicly, discovered her unresponsive on the floor of their shared residence shortly after 12 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. According to the police department’s news release, the boyfriend “left a local bar to check on his girlfriend” at home.
“When he arrived, he discovered his girlfriend on the floor,” according to police. “With the help of a friend, the male was able to transfer the female to a nearby vehicle and transport the female” to a nearby hospital.
According to the police department, Cail “succumbed to her ailment” after staff administered CPR. Cail’s identity was confirmed by her boyfriend, according to police.
The Criminal Investigation Bureau, a division of the US Virgin Islands Police Department, is now looking into the case. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau or Crime Stoppers.
CBS News contacted the police department for more information about the investigation into Cail’s death but did not receive an immediate response.
Cail began swimming competitively as a child, according to her family, and according to WMUR. Records show she competed in freestyle, butterfly, and medley races for the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships and the FINA Swimming World Cup in 1998 and 1999.

According to FINA, the swimming federation now known as World Aquatics, which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee for administering international competitions for water sports, she won a gold medal at the former and a silver medal at the latter.
Cail was a member of the University of Maine’s women’s swim team during the 2000-2001 academic year, according to the university’s alumni association.
