James Edward Kelly, who was born in the United States on February 14, 1960, played quarterback in the NFL for 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills. In addition, he played for the Houston Gamblers of the USFL for two years. Kelly was the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the 1981 Peach Bowl for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team.

The Bills selected Kelly with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, making him one of six quarterbacks drafted that year. Instead of joining the Bills, he went with the Gamblers, and he didn’t start playing for Buffalo until the USFL disbanded in 1986.

Kelly directed one of the most potent scoring attacks in NFL history, the so-called “K-Gun” style, which relied on no-huddle, shotgun formations. He was a key figure in the Bills’ run of four straight Super Bowl appearances (1990–1993), all of which ended in defeat.

In addition to his 1991 first-team All-Pro selection, Kelly was selected to five Pro Bowls. Kelly’s number was retired by the Bills, along with that of Thurman Thomas and Bruce Smith. The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him the same year, 2002.
