Does Jeffrey Holland’s Illness Link to His Wife’s Death?
After a brief hospital stay, novelist and religious leader Patricia Terry Holland p@ssed away on Thursday (20 July 2023). She was the wife of Latter-day Saint prophet Jeffrey Holland. In terms of age, she was 81.
Holland, born Patricia Terry, spent her childhood in the small southern Utah town of Enterprise, where, according to her biography at Brigham Young University, she spent her days as a self-proclaimed “genuine farm girl” milking cows with her five brothers, driving a pickup truck, and gathering potatoes every October.
She and her family moved from Enterprise’s rural pastures to the city of St. George when she was 16 years old, where she attended high school and eventually met her future husband.
Pat attended LDS Business College (now Ensign College) and Dixie College (now Utah Tech University) while she and Jeffrey Holland were dating for two years before he was called to serve a British mission. A month after Holland’s return, they got engaged, and the next day Pat moved to New York City to attend The Juilliard School to study voice and piano.
After getting married in St. George Temple in 1963, Jeffrey and Janine Holland relocated to Provo so he could finish his study. Most members of the LDS Church would refer to her as Sister Holland, but Jeffrey called her Pat. When Mary and Jeffrey got back from New York, she helped him through his time at BYU and Yale.
After some time, they started a family and eventually welcomed Matthew, Mary Alice, and David into the world. (From 2009 until his call to serve as a mission president in 2018, Matthew Holland was president of Utah Valley University. He has recently been elevated to Seventy, the highest echelon of church leadership.
In 1980, Jeffrey was called to serve as president of Brigham Young University in Provo, the church’s main campus, where Pat was like a mother to the students.
She told students in a September 1988 speech welcoming them to campus.
“I want you to know that I know something of the anxieties with which you start school this year,”
“My deepest, my most earnest wish for you, is that you will approach this year with peace and self-assurance — that you will be more caring for yourself and as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend in need. You are in need, and you ought to be your own best friend.”
Pat Holland volunteered her time and talents to the church’s Young Women General Presidency as a counselor from 1984 to 1986. Over the course of her life, she also held the position of Relief Society president four times.

In 2000, Holland’s book “A Quiet Heart” was awarded the Association for Mormon Letters’ Book of the Year prize, and a decade later, in 2020, Holland was honored with LDS Business College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. The Hollands became unwell this year.
While he and Pat recovered from the ravages of COVID-19, Jeffrey was temporarily excused from his duties as an apostle so that he could undergo kidney dialysis. He was unable to make it to April’s General Conference due to illness, but by June, he had declared his gradual return to work.
The following Facebook post provides further evidence that Jeffrey required renal dialysis:
“Pat and I have been touched by the cards, notes, thoughts, and especially by the prayers you have offered on our behalf,” he wrote on Twitter. “Your sweet gestures during this demanding time have reminded us that God watches over us, that we can always trust in him, and that he very often answers our prayers through other people.”
