An automobile accident on Mast Hill Road in Saco early on Wednesday morning claimed the life of a senior at Thornton Academy.
Just after 2:30 a.m., a homeowner who heard a loud noise and then someone shouting for aid called the police to report the collision. According to Saco Deputy Chief Corey Huntress, officers discovered a 2011 Ford Fusion that had veered off the road and collided with a sizable tree.
A teenage girl who was riding in the backseat was discovered crossing the street. According to Huntress, the Saco Fire Department used the jaws of life to free two other people who were trapped within the vehicle.
The deceased was identified as Saco resident Daniel Abbott, age 17. According to the driver, he had been a passenger in the front seat.
Riley Tulley, 18, of Saco, the driver, was rushed with life-threatening wounds to Maine Medical Center. Injuries to the backseat passenger were also sent to the hospital, but they are not thought to be life-threatening. A representative for Maine Medical Center stated that as of Wednesday night, she was unaware of Tulley’s health.

Mandy Demers, who lives close to the crash site, reported the occurrence by dialing 911.
Demers told News Center Maine, “I woke up and heard someone screaming really incredibly loud, blood-curdling screams for help.” When I went outside to investigate, I observed a female coming up our driveway and onto our deck while yelling for aid. This is the third significant accident that has almost occurred directly in front of our home in the roughly seven years that I have lived here.
“I’ve got teenagers for children. I regret the parents’ situation. I feel bad for the neighborhood. This is awful… As a police chief, I never want to receive that call, and the only thing I can advise is to slow down. A car accident that results in a fatality is not worth it.
According to headmaster Rene Menard in a statement, Abbott was an honor roll student at Thornton Academy, where the neighborhood is mourning his untimely passing.

There aren’t enough words to express the sorrow that our entire school community is experiencing, and we are thinking about Daniel’s family, Menard said. Riley Tulley, a senior at Thornton, is also. We are hoping for Riley’s recovery and are keeping Riley and his family in our prayers.
Menard added that in order to provide resources and assistance through school counselors and community partners, the school has gotten in touch with parents and students, especially those who are close to Abbott and Tulley.
Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office is also looking into the collision.
